AKK has revived this programme to provide a rising Finnish rally talent with an international showcase. The winner was determined through a test day, for which Lassila, Toni Herranen, Jesse Kallio, Niko Kalmi, and Ossi Pohjanharju were selected via the Finnish Rally Championship.

The test day was held on Tuesday at the Finnish Institute of High Performance Sport KIHU in Jyväskylä. Throughout the day, candidates underwent a series of physical and psychological tests to assess their readiness. Their abilities in media interviews, both in Finnish and English, were also evaluated.

The selection panel consisted of representatives from AKK Sports, Kihu, and the Finnish Olympic Committee. They analysed results from both the Finnish Rally Championship season and the test day. From these results, 20-year-old Lassila emerged as the winner.

Lassila leads the SM3 class of the Finnish Rally Championship with two rounds remaining. He has secured two class victories this season driving a Ford Fiesta Rally4.

In Rally Finland, Lassila will drive a more competitive Ford Fiesta Rally3. The prize includes a comprehensive support package that covers pre-event testing, Pirelli tyres, race fuel, entry fees, as well as coaching and PR support.

“Like many drivers, my goal is to become a world champion someday. Today’s win is a step in the right direction, but I understand that my ultimate goal is still a long way off. I’m taking it step by step. I’m only 20 years old, so I have time,” Lassila said.

“Now, I turn my attention to Rally Finland and my preparation for it. I will rent a Rally3 car, compete in the rally in Tampere, and train well before the official test and Rally Finland. It’s important to get as many kilometres as possible since I haven’t driven a four-wheel drive car before.”

Lassila joins the esteemed list of Flying Finn Future Star winners, a programme that has helped launch the careers of Teemu Suninen, Emil Lindholm, and Sami Pajari.

Rally Finland will take place in early August in the Jyväskylä region.
