Korhonen’s summer season in the Finnish Rally Championship started off poorly when his Toyota Yaris Rally2 rolled over in the Turku Rally in May. The Finn injured his back in the crash and consequently had to miss Rally Sardinia.

The disappointment was immense, as missing the Sardinia race was particularly hard since Korhonen, along with his co-driver Anssi Viinikka, celebrated a fantastic victory in the WRC3 class in the Mediterranean last season. That win effectively secured the Finnish driver’s championship title.

The Finnish Rally Championship continues next weekend in the surroundings of Seinäjoki city. In Pohjanmaa, Korhonen’s back should be in good condition. The Finnish pilot has recovered surprisingly quickly from the crash.

“My back has recovered well, and the rehabilitation has been successful. Now I have already been able to exercise, so everything should be fine,” Korhonen reports on his situation.

Korhonen’s situation in the Finnish Rally Championship series is still good, even though he didn’t score points in Turku. Korhonen leads the series with 70 points, ahead of Benjamin Korhola, who has 59 points. The role of the road sweeper will add to the challenge for the series leader, but despite this, the goals are set high.

“If we’re not talking about a direct win, then at least the goal is to take the best available points,” Korhonen reflects.

“The starting position is not ideal now, but we hope there isn’t much loose gravel on the route. Of course, if it rains, it could work in our favour.”

In the WRC, Korhonen finished fourth in the Rally Sweden in February. In Portugal in May, he took sixth place in the WRC2 class. A quick recovery from the injuries caused by the crash is also crucial for Korhonen’s continuation in the WRC, as he is set to compete in Poland at the end of June.
