After the Japanese round three weeks ago, Tänak announced that he would at least take a break from special stages. The Estonian did not say a final goodbye but left the door open for a possible return.
In what may be his last WRC event for now, Tänak had to settle for 11th place. The Hyundai driver suffered punctures and technical issues on Friday, which dropped him out of the victory fight.
On Saturday at the Power Stage finish, however, Tänak did not appear disappointed. The superstar looked more relieved than anything else.
He delivered an emotional message after his final run.
“I’m still super grateful for the sport, even if it’s difficult times in the sport,” Tänak said.
“Obviously the most grateful I am for my family, for allowing me to chase my dream for so long – without ever being even in my daughter’s birthday. So I’m very grateful for them. And I’m really there for them now,” added a clearly moved Tänak.
Tänak, 38, contested his first WRC rallies back in 2009. He has an impressive 176 WRC starts, claiming 22 victories and 58 podiums.
He secured his only world title with Toyota in 2019 and has also represented Hyundai and M-Sport Ford in the top tier.
