The More Than Machine documentary delighted rally fans last year. The series followed the M-Sport Ford team’s journey in the World Rally Championship and gave viewers a fascinating look behind the scenes.
More Than Machine was released in August 2024. Produced by Superlative Films in collaboration with M-Sport’s main sponsor SafetyCulture, the series was praised for its human-centred approach and unique perspective on one of the most demanding disciplines in motorsport.
The first season consisted of seven episodes in total. The episodes offered insights into the origins of M-Sport as well as the drama of contract negotiations.
“Being nominated for Best Original Content is a true testament to the passion, dedication, and storytelling talent of our team here at Superlative,” said Gary Osborne, founder and director of Superlative Films.
A second season is already in the works, and to the delight of rally fans, it will follow not only M-Sport but also two other WRC teams, Toyota and Hyundai.
“Bringing to light the human stories behind those rally machines has been a real privilege, and we can’t wait for fans to see how Season 2 captures the journey across all three teams. It’s going to be explosive,” Osborne added.
In addition to the SportsPro Media Awards nomination, More Than Machine has already received other recognition. The third episode, Legacy, has been nominated for Best Documentary Episode at the International Motor Film Awards. Earlier this year, it also received an honourable mention as Documentary of the Year at The Race Media Awards.
“To be nominated for a second award in a matter of weeks speaks volumes for the strength of this series and why we committed to a second season, in which we will lift the lid even more on the WRC service park, additionally following the stories behind the scenes at Toyota and Hyundai,” said Luke Anear, Chairman of the Board at SafetyCulture.
But the series would never have succeeded without M-Sport’s openness and willingness to welcome the film crew. M-Sport’s Team Principal, Richard Millener, was one of the central figures in the first season.
“Seeing first-hand what has gone into this series, being nominated for these awards is a wonderful additional accolade, especially for Luke and Superlative. Superlative seamlessly embedded themselves into our team, quickly becoming part of the background which allowed them to capture the incredible work, passion and emotion that personifies the M-Sport brand. It’s been an amazing experience to be part of this,” Millener commented.
