In the season-ending rally in Saudi Arabia, Fourmaux delivered the best result of his career by finishing second. In addition, the Hyundai driver achieved third place in Monte Carlo, Greece and Chile.
On many occasions, even more would have been within reach. For example, in Saudi Arabia the victory most likely slipped away due to an unfortunate communication error with the organiser, which resulted in a one-minute time penalty.
“Everybody is telling me it’s coming, you know? So it’s been 14 rallies that everybody was telling me it’s coming but so many things happened this year. Some things was happening outside the sport, like when I forgot to take my belt in Sweden and also an electronic issue there,” Fourmaux says.
“In Kenya, the problem, which was I would say caused from Sweden. The others had new parts, not me. There was many things like that. Like there was the rain in Paraguay. I lost the second position there. There was a plenty of things like that, for example in Japan, the mist on the windscreen. Always small things with big consequences.”
Although the season may not have been quite what Fourmaux had hoped for in advance after switching from the private M-Sport Ford team to Hyundai, the year still yielded plenty of positives. Fourmaux showed top speed in many rallies, but as he himself said, many small things ended up ruining the result on several occasions.
“The management of the rallies is there. We need to have the reliability and no mistakes. So this is all the things that I need to learn. And I just need to keep the motivation,” Fourmaux explained.
“I should not doubt anything because I don’t think there is a reason to doubt of what we have done this season. Many times we have been ahead of two world champions with the same car.”
