While reigning world champion Thierry Neuville retired due to a technical issue and fellow champion Ott Tänak struggled with his car, Fourmaux has kept his foot flat to the floor, delivering outstanding stage times. So far, he has been the only driver able to somewhat match the pace of the leading duo, Sébastien Ogier and Elfyn Evans.

Fourmaux is on course for his fourth podium finish of the season, with just over 20 seconds separating him from the lead — meaning even Ogier and Evans can’t afford any mistakes.

“I’m really pleased with my pace. This was a really good day, one of the best of the whole season. I was able to push with confidence on every stage and every place. We set a couple of fastest times and were right up there with the leaders every time,” Fourmaux beamed.

On Sunday, the story will change dramatically as the sunshine gives way to heavy rain. The special stages will become even more challenging and extremely slippery.

“Normally, I’ve been quite comfortable driving on wet asphalt, but in the last couple of rallies we’ve struggles with the car in those conditions. Hopefully, we’ve made a step forward now and can push tomorrow,” Fourmaux explained.

“Who knows what will happen tomorrow. We’ll just keep our heads down.”

In the previous round in Central Europe, Fourmaux had been as lost with his car’s asphalt setup as Tänak and Neuville. The Frenchman said his speed in Rally Japan comes down to one simple thing — he decided to stop complaining.

“I just decided to push and drive as fast as I can. I made that decision after the second stage yesterday, and I kept the same attitude today. It seems to be working.”
