The ERC season was due to begin with the Hungarian round on 20–22 March. However, the championship has now confirmed that the gravel event cannot be held.
The cancellation is due to financial difficulties faced by the event organisers. A replacement round is now being sought, as otherwise the season would be reduced to just seven events.
As things stand, the ERC season is expected to get under way with the Rally Sierra Morena asphalt event in Spain in mid-April.
“We have been working on securing an appropriate replacement. The process is ongoing and an update will be provided in due course,” ERC championship manager Iain Campbell said in a statement.
There is not yet any more detailed information on where a potential new event would be placed in the calendar.
Finnish driver Roope Korhonen claimed victory at last year’s Rally Hungary. Hungary first joined the European Rally Championship calendar in 2019.
