This season, Lappi has alternated in Hyundai’s third car with Andreas Mikkelsen and Dani Sordo.
Lappi began his season in the best possible way in February at Rally Sweden, securing his second career victory in the Umeå region. However, since then, the Finn has faltered in three consecutive rallies.
In Kenya, Lappi suffered from technical issues, in Latvia his pace was completely off, and in Finland, he crashed straight into a tree, damaging his car.
Hyundai might very well change its strategy for next season by appointing just one permanent driver for its third car. In this game of musical chairs, it is likely that Lappi will be left without a seat when the music stops.
For next season, Hyundai needs a driver who is not only fast but, above all, consistent and reliable. Based on recent performances, Lappi unfortunately does not fit the bill.
Over the past two seasons, Lappi has made simply too many mistakes, and Hyundai has surely noticed this. For example, Adrien Fourmaux, who has been driving for M-Sport Ford this season, has performed consistently well, almost always bringing the car to the finish and earning good points. The Frenchman has been precisely the kind of steady, reliable, and fast driver that Hyundai needs. Rumours have already linked Fourmaux with a move to the Korean manufacturer.
Lappi has repeatedly stated recently that he wants to spend more time with his family. He even told RallyJournal.com earlier that he wouldn’t drive a full season again, even if offered “50 million euros.”
I don’t doubt Lappi’s sincerity (though perhaps not the exact amount of money). I genuinely believe that family is very important to him – and of course, children and family are more important than rallying at the top level.
However, it is also likely that Lappi would still enjoy competing in rallies. The Finn has said that he still enjoys the sport. But now it strongly appears that Lappi will get his heartfelt wish to spend more time with his family, as there might not be any rallying opportunities available for him next year.
Lappi won’t be going to Toyota. The team has stated that they want young blood, and at this point, Sami Pajari seems to be in a strong position. M-Sport, on the other hand, is likely eyeing up Martins Sesks, who has already impressed in the two rallies he has competed in this season.
Lappi will likely drive only one more rally this season. The Finn is expected to compete in the Rally Chile at the end of September. It could very well be Lappi’s last rally – at least at the top level – in his career.
