Does the WRC veteran still have a seat in the championship? “Maybe not”

Sordo has spent several years as a part-time driver for Hyundai, proving to be a reliable performer for the team. Even this year, he secured two podium finishes in three WRC events.

Speculation about Sordo’s future has been rife this autumn. The most extreme rumours suggest that Sordo could even become the new team principal of Hyundai’s WRC team, while current boss Cyril Abiteboul might focus on broader responsibilities as the head of Hyundai Motorsport – such as overseeing Hyundai’s upcoming circuit racing project.

Sordo himself has hinted that he’s not ready to step into an office role just yet. The 41-year-old Spanish driver stated in November that he still sees himself as a driver.

The question remains, however, whether Hyundai will have a place for Sordo, as the team is still evaluating the possibility of running a fourth car in the 2025 season.

It’s already confirmed that Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak will continue as Hyundai’s top stars. Additionally, the team announced earlier this week that Adrien Fourmaux will drive the third car for a full season.

If Hyundai does introduce a fourth Rally1 car, they will need one, or potentially two, additional drivers. This year, Sordo, Esapekka Lappi, and Andreas Mikkelsen shared driving duties in the team’s third car.

“I like seeing Dani in the car; it’s where he belongs,” Neuville said in an interview with the Spanish newspaper Marca.

“I don’t know if there will be a place for him in the team next year – maybe not – but he’s a very important part of Hyundai Motorsport’s history and a great ambassador. So I think they’ll find a solution for him,” the world champion remarked.

Sordo and Neuville will be behind the wheel of Hyundai’s Rally1 car this weekend in Italy, where the Monza Rally Show takes place from Friday to Sunday.
