Lappi damaged his car on the penultimate stage when the rear of his vehicle slipped out on a slick corner. The front of the car took a hit, and Lappi reached the stage finish without the front bumper.
Ultimately, Lappi had to pull out of the rally on the liaison section before the final Power Stage. The Hyundai’s radiator was damaged, preventing the Finnish driver from continuing.
Lappi’s weekend in Chile had been problematic overall. His pace was lacking, and he had already damaged the front of his car on Saturday.
Lappi was running in eighth place before his retirement, trailing the leader by five and a half minutes.
This setback wasn’t a major blow for Hyundai, as the team’s star drivers Ott Tänak and Thierry Neuville are ahead of Lappi in the standings. Therefore, the team isn’t losing points in the manufacturers’ championship battle.
Toyota’s Kalle Rovanperä leads Rally Chile ahead of his teammate Elfyn Evans, with Hyundai’s Tänak in third.
The Power Stage begins at 18:15 CET.
