Fourmaux drove a strong rally in Chile and even led the event at times. In the end, the Frenchman finished third.
His pace was solid throughout the South American tour, but in Paraguay he endured a major setback.
In Paraguay, Fourmaux was still holding second place before the Power Stage, but the rain dropped him off the podium. In the end, Hyundai decided on a retirement for the Frenchman.
“To be fair, I’m just happy to be on the podium. We missed it in Paraguay, and I think it was quite hard to accept,” said Fourmaux.
Fourmaux, however, could not quite keep up with the Toyota drivers – rally winner Sébastien Ogier and Elfyn Evans.
“But overall, it was strong. I would say in South America I can be pleased. We were leading on Friday, holding it quite well on Saturday morning, and then suddenly– we dropped down, or they just went up,” Fourmaux noted.
But his team-mate, reigning world champion Thierry Neuville, was left behind. That, of course, tasted sweet.
“We kept the world champion behind us with the same car, so we can be pleased with that. And for sure, we need to work on the car to improve in the conditions of Saturday and Sunday,” said Fourmaux.
Toyota, however, has been wiping the floor with Hyundai all season. The Korean squad now faces a big question of how to turn the situation onto more favourable tracks.
“We need to understand why, improve on that, and then move forward,” Fourmaux outlined.
