Latvala started the morning well and was leading the competition after the first special stage. However, problems began to arise, and the crew did not even start the third special stage.
Latvala was forced to retire due to a technical fault, which was apparently related to the turbo.
Latvala has already won in Lahti seven times, but this tenth attempt ended in significant disappointment.
Latvala participated in the historic class with his Toyota Celica. His co-driver for this event was Janni Hussi, who took on the role for the first time after stepping down from co-driving for Lauri Joona following Rally Finland.
In the overall standings, after three special stages, Florent Todeschini has moved into the lead. He is driving a Ford Escort. Marko Uutela is in second place with his Opel Ascona. The Finnish driver is, however, already more than half a minute behind the leader.
Jari Huttunen, participating in the race with a Ford Escort RS, is currently in third place, 38 seconds behind the leader.
The Lahti Historic Rally is part of the European Championship series for historic cars. The Lahti event is the sixth round of the season.
