However, team principal Jari-Matti Latvala found some consolation in his own race in the WRC2 class. Latvala made a splendid debut in the WRC2 level in Central Finland, finishing second behind Oliver Solberg.

Latvala had not previously competed in the WRC2 class or driven the team’s Rally2 car, so his result is considered excellent.

“It went quite well. The goal was to finish in the top five in the class. Second place and sixth overall, so I exceeded my goals significantly,” Latvala said with satisfaction after the rally.

Particularly, succeeding on one of Latvala’s all-time favorite stages, Myhinpää, on Friday warmed the heart of the WRC’s most experienced driver. The return of Ouninpohja also received praise from him, as Latvala had to retire from the lead on that stage in 2017.

“I have to say, winning Myhinpää both times was mentally important. I was really focused on it, and it was a big deal. Of course, there were other great moments as well,” Latvala summed up.

“It was nice to drive Ouninpohja twice since I had unfinished business there from 2017. Starting Sunday morning with the Moksi special stage was also wonderful. The weather was great, and it felt amazing to drive.”

This Rally Finland was Latvala’s 19th career rally. Next year, the team boss will turn 40, so competing in his 20th home WRC rally is almost a must.

“I already said earlier that I have to drive next year as well. I asked Juho (co-driver Hänninen), who replied that if these wounds heal, then maybe it will happen,” Latvala laughed.

“Juho also said that it was quite fun, but he didn’t want to talk precisely about next year yet.”

Solberg ultimately dominated the WRC2 class, with Latvala trailing by 39 seconds. Lauri Joona finished second in the class, 2.6 seconds ahead of Mikko Heikkilä.
