Hyundai has already fallen 125 points behind Toyota in the manufacturers’ standings, and in practice, Toyota’s title is now only awaiting confirmation.

But that confirmation still needs to be sealed, and the first chance to do so opens up this coming weekend.

“If we do well now, we could wrap up one championship already. That’s been my main goal. Our drivers can then sort out among themselves who’s the best. They all have the same opportunities there, but things are certainly looking good at the moment,” Toyota team boss Juha Kankkunen laughed when speaking to Rallyjournal.com.

At the top of the drivers’ championship is Sébastien Ogier, two points ahead of Elfyn Evans. Kalle Rovanperä is third, 21 points behind. Toyota therefore holds the top three positions in the drivers’ standings, and no one needs to hold back in the slightest.

“There’s no need to save anything. We’ll give everyone the best possible equipment we can. Then we’ll see who takes it this year,” Kankkunen said.

Kankkunen sees no need to name a favourite for the rally win, but naturally, the eight-time world champion Ogier is a strong contender — not least because of his starting position.

“I rate Seb quite highly. He’s experienced, and these asphalt stages definitely suit him well. He’ll be a tough one to beat here. When he gets into his rhythm, he really drives hard,” Kankkunen assessed.

But Rovanperä shouldn’t be forgotten either.

“Kalle was really unlucky that the two South American rallies were ruined by punctures, which caused him to drop back. Otherwise, the three of them would probably all be within two points of each other,” Kankkunen said regretfully on behalf of his fellow countryman.

“But Kalle still has a chance. He just needs to drive and see what happens. There are still three rallies left, so there are quite a lot of points still available,” Kankkunen continued.

Expectations — and demands — are also high for Sami Pajari.

“Sami has generally always driven consistently fast on asphalt. I told him to just go for it. He’s got nothing to lose. He can just drive with a smile on his face,” Kankkunen said.

During his illustrious rally career as a driver, Kankkunen won four world championships. Now, a fifth is within reach — in a way.

“We’ve been aiming for the team title, and that’s been my task. For me, it would be like a fifth world championship. I could be quite satisfied with the season then,” Kankkunen smiled.
