On Saturday, Rovanperä won a 30-minute race, but things did not go according to plan on Sunday at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. The Finnish star from Toyota’s WRC team started the Sunday race from fourth on the grid and got off to a good start.
However, trouble struck on the first lap when Rovanperä spun and went off the track. While running in second place, Rovanperä attempted to overtake the race leader, Dirk Schouten, but his car’s front end made slight contact with Schouten’s rear bumper, causing Rovanperä to spin out.
Following the spin, Rovanperä fell to the back of the pack with a significant gap. Nevertheless, the rally star did not give up and began a fierce charge toward better positions. Ultimately, Rovanperä crossed the finish line in sixth place.
On Sunday, Sacha Norden claimed victory, marking his first career win in the Porsche Cup. The Dutch double victory was secured by Schouten in second place, followed by Belgian driver Benjamin Paque in third. Also finishing ahead of Rovanperä were Dreke Janssen and Kobe Pauwels.
The final race weekend of the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux season will take place on October 11-12 at the Zolder circuit in Belgium. Meanwhile, Rovanperä’s season continues with the WRC round in Chile later this month, after which he can once again focus on his circuit racing pursuits.
Another Finnish driver, Jani Käkelä, finished tenth in the race. However, Käkelä won the Pro-Am class and remains firmly in contention for the class championship.
