Rovanperä took the lead during Saturday afternoon’s loop and never relinquished it after that.
However, on Friday, the Finn was still struggling. Rovanperä wasn’t particularly happy with his driving or his car on Friday. That changed on Saturday.
“We changed some small things. But of course, like Friday stages were really different than Saturday and Sunday,” Rovanperä reflected after the rally.
“So I was expecting that on Saturday and Sunday I could be a bit more comfortable with the stages. And of course, the weather played a big part in that. We could have taken a bit bigger time gaps than others and really tried to be faster in the difficult conditions,” Rovanperä continued.
Rovanperä handled the incredibly challenging conditions best of all. Driving in thick fog was a major challenge for everyone, but the two-time world champion once again showed his skill.
“I didn’t feel I made any big risks. You just really need to push and keep going, even in the really difficult conditions. So, it was a really clever drive,” Rovanperä said.
This season, Rovanperä has only competed part-time in the World Rally Championship. The Finn has won four rallies, but there have also been some disappointments.
“We have been leading every rally where we have been driving,” Rovanperä pointed out.
“In Finland, we couldn’t do anything, but Sweden and Portugal, I would have wanted to fight for the win until the end. The speed was there. It’s nice to see we could win every rally we started, at least so far. And also four wins and good points for the team. It’s not so bad,” Rovanperä concluded as he reviewed his season.
