The election took place on Sunday, 26 October, during the general assembly held in Jyväskylä.

AKK’s previous chairman, Jarmo Mahonen, had already announced at the end of last year that he would step down at the beginning of the current year, even though his term was set to continue until the end of this year.

According to a statement released by AKK in November 2024, Mahonen’s decision stemmed from his desire to make room for new leadership and to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

Toni Vilander brings extensive experience to the leadership of AKK thanks to his strong motorsport background. Born in 1980 in Kankaanpää, Vilander also holds a clear vision of how Finnish motorsport should be developed in the future.

Vilander has a particularly strong background in circuit racing. He is a Le Mans winner, FIA WEC World Champion and a long-time Ferrari factory driver. In addition, he is well-known to many motorsport fans from Formula One broadcasts, where he has worked for years as a television expert.

“I feel that one of my most important tasks is to narrow the gap between AKK and the national motorsport scene. I want to clarify decision-making processes and bring transparency and a spirit of cooperation to our activities. Motorsport is a community that we build together,” Vilander said upon his election.

Vilander has a clear vision of how he intends to fulfil the demanding role of chairman.

“Vilander’s election signals the federation’s willingness to reform and to strengthen its connection with those working in the field. Under his leadership, AKK aims for a more inclusive, transparent and forward-looking operational culture,” AKK stated in its release.

“Toni Vilander’s strong experience, international network and genuine passion for motorsport provide an excellent foundation for leading the federation in the coming years,” AKK added.

Vilander will begin his term at the start of 2026, and his tenure will last for the following two years.
