This season, Solberg has competed in the WRC2 class of the World Rally Championship with Toksport’s Skoda Fabia. He has secured three class wins throughout the season and currently leads the series ahead of the season-ending Rally Japan.
Solberg’s only remaining rival for the championship is Sami Pajari, who could still overtake the Swede in Japan. Solberg has completed all his points-scoring events, so he can no longer influence the final outcome.
“It’s tough to sit and watch Japan happen, but what can we do?” Solberg laments on the World Rally Championship’s website.
Pajari must place at least second in Japan. If he does so, he would surpass Solberg and claim the WRC2 championship title.
Whatever the outcome, Solberg says he is proud of his season and his performance.
“It’s been such a strong season for us and I believe we deserve the title. Okay, now we have to wait to Japan to find out if it comes for us, but we have done all we could and that’s all we can say,” Solberg asserts.
Solberg extends his gratitude to the entire team for an excellent season.
“It’s this kind of team work that makes it possible for us to win the stages we have won and, of course, three WRC2 rounds. We’re the only crew to have won a stage on every event started and we’ve won 42% of them,” Solberg calculates.
The season-ending Rally Japan is scheduled for 21-24 November.
