The Estonian Hyundai star announced after Rally Japan a few weeks ago that he will step away from the World Rally Championship. Tänak did not close the door entirely on his future, leaving the option of a comeback open.

He faced the media in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday for the first time since announcing his break. Tänak revealed that the decision had actually been made already at the end of the summer.

“It is quite a relief to be honest,” he said.

Tänak was asked whether he had completely ruled out the possibility of driving something already next season.

“I would say generally it’s all very open at the moment,” Tänak revealed.

“I didn’t want to retire, like Seb did, you know, that you do a big show and then you come back next year,” the Estonian fired with a smile at eight-time world champion Sébastien Ogier, who has been a part-time WRC driver for several years.

“So I guess life will show if we will continue or not,” Tänak added.

One thing he did clarify, however, was that he will not be missing the WRC paddock right away.

“Not for the next half a year,” Tänak laughed.

Rally Saudi Arabia begins on Wednesday evening with a short super special stage.
