Tänak will turn 38 in October, and in his case, age is more than just a number.

He believes he has changed for the better over the years as life experience has accumulated.

He’s also noticed the more literal signs of aging.

“A few years older than at the beginning of my career. So yeah, old man,” Tänak grinned.

Tänak truly broke into the WRC scene in 2012, when he earned a seat with M-Sport Ford. That season, he claimed his first podium finish at Rally Sardinia – but consistency was still lacking.

His real breakthrough came in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, he won his first WRC rally while driving for M-Sport’s top team, and in 2018 he moved to Toyota as a factory driver, where regular success began to build.

That upward trajectory peaked in 2019 when Tänak clinched his first – and so far only – world championship title.

Looking back, Tänak believes the years have made him a better driver – and, more importantly, a wiser person.

“I’ve gained a lot of experience. You know how people work and how the teams are working,” he said.

“Obviously, I’ve been in different teams, so I’ve seen a lot. I’ve experienced a lot. And I think I’m actually very grateful for that. I’ve enjoyed every part of my career, and I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve had,” Tänak continued.

He also feels his mindset toward the sport has evolved compared to ten years ago.

“I think, yeah, ten years ago I probably didn’t know exactly how to take it or how to manage it, for sure. These days I’ve seen much more of life, so I have kind of an idea how to manage different situations,” Tänak explained.

Those hard-earned lessons will be put to use once again as Tänak sets his sights on a fourth win at Rally Finland. He has previously triumphed at the legendary event in 2018, 2019, and 2022.

Rally Finland takes place from 31 July to 3 August.
