Although Tänak did clock one fastest time during the loop of three stages, Ogier was clearly quicker on the other two. As a result, the Toyota driver now leads the rally by 15 seconds after nine special stages.
Tänak lost some time on the final stage of the loop due to a puncture on his Hyundai’s left rear tyre.
“Firstly we had a bit of a slow puncture and then, basically, five kilometres before the end it was completely flat, but we managed to get through. It stayed on the rim, so we didn’t lose too much time,” Tänak reported.
Ogier and Tänak had already battled for victory in the previous round in Portugal, and now the same duo are once again fighting for the top spot in Sardinia.
The rally has already served up a fair share of drama, and Tänak believes the afternoon loop could bring even more chaos.
“It looks like this afternoon is going to be much rougher than yesterday. We’ve already seen quite a few punctures, and it’s starting to feel a bit like a lottery with the tyres,” Tänak stated grimly.
Nevertheless, he made it clear that Ogier won’t be getting an easy run to the finish – despite the Frenchman’s impressive pace.
“For sure they are able to set a good pace, and he (Ogier) definitely feels good in his car. But it’s still all to play for.”
“I always try my best, but obviously this rally has been a bit tricky with the car. There’s been quite a bit of understeer, and it’s difficult to find a good flow like that. But I will try my best,” Tänak said.
