Ott Tänak shuts down talk of a WRC return

Ott Tänak has stepped away from the World Rally Championship – at least for now – following last weekend’s Rally Saudi Arabia.

Tänak announced three weeks ago, after Rally Japan, that this season would be his last in the WRC for the time being. The 38-year-old Estonian did not rule out a potential return, but there are no immediate plans.

Tänak’s final campaign resulted in fourth place in the championship standings.

“The only thing that is great about the sport are the cars. They are fantastic. This I will miss a lot,” Tänak admitted.

But there are many other, less enjoyable aspects he will not miss. He no longer needs to spend long stretches away from family or constantly answer media questions.

For the first time in years, he can focus on things he has never had time for.

“We’ve been doing this 10 or 15 years full time. So it’s been a busy time and I’ve had the opportunity to chase my dream. I’m very grateful for the team and also for my family for allowing me to do this. It’s been a great time,” he said.

The 2025 WRC season has only just concluded, but the stars continuing next year will soon begin preparations for the Monte Carlo season-opener. That familiar routine no longer concerns Tänak.

“The first holiday is just at the time of Monte Carlo. So I’m definitely not following Monte,” he smiled.

A short answer to a big rumour

There has been speculation that Tänak might still appear in a one-off WRC round next year, with his home rally in Estonia seen as the most likely option. For organisers, his presence on the gravel roads around Tartu would be a huge attraction.

But Tänak shut down the rumours instantly.

“I’ve had all these offers already, and I’ve booked all my holidays exactly in the weekends of rallies, so I definitely have no chance,” Tänak quipped.

So we won’t see you in a WRC round next year?

“No,” came the brief reply.

Tänak is unsure whether he will compete in any smaller national rallies next year.

“I’m not sure if I do some local rally or what is the case at the moment – no plans. The first plan is just to switch off from the sport. All the work in the background, the fitness and all this, still stays there and let’s see what the rest brings. But a few holidays are planned anyway,” he noted.
