Petter Solberg, who has already retired from active competition, and Oliver Solberg were both seated behind the wheel of a Skoda 200 RS rally car in the Czech Republic.
Petter Solberg and the Skoda 200 RS already shared something in common: both were born 50 years ago, in 1974 – and neither is quite rusted yet.
Thanks to its aluminium panels, the Skoda 200 RS weighs just about 800 kilos. Its 2.0-litre engine produces 170 horsepower, and the car can reach a top speed of up to 240 kilometres per hour.
“It must have been a special experience to drive it in competition,” Petter Solberg said.
However, production of the Skoda 200 RS was short-lived. The car debuted in 1974 in the IDA Rally in what was then Czechoslovakia. A couple of weeks later, Skoda brought two new cars to the Barum Rally and to its own event, Rally Skoda, held in the manufacturer’s hometown of Mlada Boleslav.
Soon after, the rules changed, leading to the end of production. As a result, only two Skoda 200 RS cars ever saw the light of day.
Petter and Oliver Solberg thoroughly enjoyed their memorable experience behind the wheel of this rare vehicle. This time, father Petter took the wheel, while Oliver sat in the passenger seat.
“Well, you haven’t lost it,” Oliver Solberg quipped to his father after the drive.
“I don’t think so. I was smiling the whole time. I won’t sleep tonight,” Petter replied.
