The Canary Islands made their debut as a World Rally Championship round last April, having previously been part of the European Rally Championship for a long time.
The organisers’ initial agreement also covers the 2026 season, with the rally taking place again in April. According to reports, the event is now close to securing a long-term extension.
Automovilismo Canario reports that the organisers have been negotiating with the WRC Promoter for months over a new contract. According to the outlet, the parties have already reached an agreement that would run until 2031.
The news has not yet been officially confirmed, but the website states that the organisers will announce the long extension at a later press event.
The local government of the Canary Islands invested millions of euros to bring a WRC round to the archipelago. Now it appears the asphalt event is here to stay on the holiday island.
The inaugural WRC edition of Rally Islas Canarias was dominated by Toyota and Kalle Rovanperä. Rovanperä claimed a commanding victory, while Toyota locked out the top four positions.
Next year, Rally Islas Canarias is scheduled for 23–26 April. The season will begin in late January with the iconic Rally Monte Carlo.
