The asphalt event, held on the island of Gran Canaria, made its WRC debut last season after previously being a long-standing fixture on the European Rally Championship calendar.
In December, strong indications emerged from the Canary Islands that the rally was set to receive a long-term contract extension from the WRC Promoter. On Thursday, it was officially confirmed that the Canary Islands round will remain on the WRC calendar through to the 2029 season.
The new agreement covers the 2027–29 seasons, while the previous contract already ensured the event’s place on the calendar this year.
“Rally Islas Canarias has made an immediate and very positive impact on the WRC. The quality of the event, the character of the roads and the commitment shown by all local, regional and national partners give us great confidence in its long-term future on the calendar,” said WRC Promoter’s senior events director Simon Larkin.
“Securing this agreement through to 2029 is an important step in building stability and continuity for the championship.”
The first-ever Canary Islands WRC round proved to be a showcase for Toyota and Kalle Rovanperä. Rovanperä cruised to a dominant victory, while Toyota locked out the top four positions in the rally.
This year’s Rally Islas Canarias will take place on 23–26 April. The WRC season will get under way in two weeks’ time with the iconic Rally Monte Carlo.
