The accident occurred in the Nyski Rally, which was part of the Polish Historic Rally Championship. Co-driver Maciej Krzysik was taken from the scene to hospital.
The BMW driven by Sekowski went off the road and hit a tree about two kilometres from the start of the sixth special stage of the event. The car caught fire after the collision.
“Despite first aid efforts, the 40-year-old driver died at the scene of the accident. The co-driver was taken to hospital. Out of respect for the injured, their families, and the entire rally community, the organisers have decided to end the event,” the organisers said in a statement on Sunday afternoon, according to local media.
“The competition will not continue. Car number 112 went off the road on the sixth special stage and caught fire. Rescue teams arrived at the scene immediately. Unfortunately, the driver could not be saved. The co-driver, who suffered burns, was extricated from the car and transported to hospital.”
Many photos from the scene circulated on social media as early as Sunday. The organisers requested that privacy be respected following the extremely tragic incident.
“The organisers of the rally express their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased driver and wish the co-driver a speedy recovery. At the same time, they ask that the privacy of those injured be respected and that speculation be avoided.”
Sekowski’s rally career began in 2014. He always competed in a BMW.
