Before this season, Ogier had never managed to win in South America, but the Frenchman decided it was time to wipe that stain from his record.

He secured victories in both Paraguay and Chile. At the same time, he significantly improved his position in the championship, now moving into the lead by two points ahead of his team-mate Elfyn Evans.

At first, however, it didn’t look as if there would be any celebrations for Toyota in Chile. Hyundai’s Ott Tänak was leading the rally before his technical troubles, and his team-mate Adrien Fourmaux also briefly held the lead. In the end, though, the story was a familiar one: Ogier took the win and Evans ensured a one-two for the team.

“It’s always better to be in this situation where things go your way, because sometimes it’s the opposite and you are the one looking for answers,” Ogier said after Rally Chile.

Hyundai’s collapse in Chile was brutal. Tänak was forced to retire due to technical issues, while neither Fourmaux nor Thierry Neuville were ultimately able to challenge the Toyota drivers.

“It was a a bit surprising. Ott was obviously driving very fast and I believe he was the fastest Hyundai driver. With his misfortune, that clearly changed a lot the physiognomy of the rally,” Ogier said.

“I think we are in a sport where it’s a lot about the driver and the co-driver, and also what the team is doing,” Ogier continued.

A driver and co-driver can do a great job, and still the technology can always let you down. Recently, that technology has failed more often for Hyundai drivers than for Toyota ones. But that’s something you just have to accept.

“I never tried to hide any bad performance behind the car. And some drivers do that a lot, I know. It’s nothing new,” Ogier jabbed at his rivals.

Ogier also admitted that this season he has benefitted from a very reliable car.

“One thing is clear though: Toyota’s reliability is very good. And let’s hope they carry on like this,” the Frenchman concluded.
