Tänak set the fastest time on the second pass through the Felgueiras stage, beating Toyota’s Kalle Rovanperä by 5.2 seconds and the second-fastest driver, Elfyn Evans, by 5.1 seconds.
Toyota’s Sébastien Ogier continues to lead the rally overall, but Tänak managed to shave 6.6 seconds off the Frenchman’s advantage.
The Estonian also took a firm grip on the Super Sunday leaderboard. Tänak now leads Rovanperä by 10 seconds and Ogier by 22.5 seconds in Sunday’s classification.
Toyota’s Sami Pajari had a strong stage as well, beating Ogier and finishing just 5.4 seconds off Tänak’s benchmark. Pajari holds on to seventh overall.
In the overall standings, Ogier still leads the rally, but Tänak has closed the gap to 13.6 seconds. Rovanperä dropped to third place and is now 15.1 seconds behind the leader.
Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville remains fourth, trailing the lead by 42.3 seconds. Toyota’s Takamoto Katsuta continues in fifth, but his deficit has grown to over a minute and a half.
Katsuta had a dramatic moment on the Felgueiras stage. The Japanese driver hit a loose rock, launching his car into a ditch. Fortunately, the car escaped without serious damage.
Only one stage remains in Rally Portugal. The traditional Fafe stage will once again serve as the Power Stage finale.
