Series leader Neuville finished only eighth in Latvia, and the Belgian did not manage to improve his situation significantly on Super Sunday either. On Sunday, Neuville was only fifth, but he did manage to grab three extra points from the Power Stage.

Thus, Neuville’s total score from Latvia was only nine championship points. The only comforting thing for the Belgian was that the championship lead remained in his name.

Neuville suffered significantly in Latvia from his role as the road sweeper, and he couldn’t help but complain about it again.

“It’s been discussed for years, but it has never changed,” Neuville said.

“We have never had eight rallies in a row on gravel in the past, and never such an event with so many different stages. So that was something particular,” Neuville continued.

Neuville could have improved his starting position as the rally progressed with better driving, but he couldn’t manage that in the challenging conditions. Neuville assumed the leading car role immediately after the season-opening Monte Carlo Rally, and he has maintained his top spot since.

“The gap was so big in the championship because we did so well at the beginning of the year that somehow we are first all the time,” Neuville explained.

“And it could be that after Finland, we will not be first anymore,” Neuville continued.

Neuville has been heard complaining about the same issue before. However, the Belgian should remember that many others have overcome the challenges of the starting position and driven to the championship. The experienced Belgian has yet to win a championship in his career.
