Hyundai star Neuville has become known for his generosity, consistently donating money to local charities at each WRC event. The better the Belgian performed in a rally, the larger the sum he contributed to a good cause.

However, ahead of this week’s Safari Rally Kenya, Neuville revealed that he has made a tough decision. This time, he will not be making a donation in Kenya.

There is a clear reason behind this: transparency issues in Africa have made the process increasingly challenging.

“This year we decided to stop. We have been facing a challenge here in Kenya for the last two years already. I mean, you never know what happened with the money, and it’s very difficult to continue to do it again,” Neuville explained to Kenya’s Daily Nation.

“We will continue next year once we identify and work with a professional body which will see where the money goes and show us,” the Hyundai driver added.

Last year, Neuville secured his first world championship title. After the season-ending Rally Japan, he auctioned off the helmet he had worn in the final round. The helmet featured a special livery designed by artist Tadaomi Kawasaki.

The winning bid for the helmet reached an impressive €95,800. Over the years, Neuville has channelled a significant amount of money into charitable causes.

“My mother told me I have been lucky making money, which I should share with others in need,” Neuville said, explaining the motivation behind his philanthropy.

Safari Rally Kenya begins on Thursday.
