This time, the camera crew takes viewers behind the scenes of the Rally Canary Islands, driven in the spring, where the differences between the Toyota and Hyundai teams were laid bare in striking fashion.
Toyota ultimately claimed an incredible one-two-three-four on the popular holiday island, and Kalle Rovanperä was utterly dominant in the event. Hyundai, on the other hand, seemed to be on a completely different page throughout, and the entire team appeared utterly baffled as to why their car lacked even a drop of performance compared with Toyota’s.
Toyota’s technical director Tom Fowler gives an interview to the cameras, in which he may have revealed the biggest reason why Toyota have celebrated the manufacturers’ title year after year, while Hyundai have repeatedly struggled.
“When we go into a rally, teamwork is really important to us,” Fowler begins in front of the cameras.
“Of course, it’s difficult to say from outside Hyundai, but looking from the outside, it seems as though they don’t work together as a team. It looks more like they operate as individual drivers. Perhaps they want to work that way, but that’s not how we do things,” Fowler states.
Fowler also emphasises that the desire to win is extremely strong at Toyota.
“The will to win and to beat them is really strong throughout the whole team,” he says.
Hyundai’s difficulties continued even after Rally Canary Islands. Ott Tänak managed to return the team to winning ways in Greece and Thierry Neuville took his only victory of the season at the season-ending Rally Saudi Arabia, but otherwise the 2025 season will go down in history as a bewilderingly dominant display by Toyota.
