Last year, Toyota was in a league of its own at the Safari, achieving a four-car sweep in Africa. This year, repeating that achievement isn’t possible simply because the team has only three cars participating in the event.
This year, Toyota’s flag bearers are Kalle Rovanperä, Elfyn Evans, and Takamoto Katsuta. Sebastien Ogier has opted out of Kenya this time.
Team principal Jari-Matti Latvala admits that the challenge is greater than last year. The Safari is being held during the rainy season this time.
“For sure it is challenging. We know that in the previous years, I think our strength has been the reliability. And that’s how we have managed to get the results,” Latvala told RallyJournal.com.
“At the same time, we know that Hyundai has been significantly improving their car, so it’s going to be more challenging. But again, I believe patience is a crucial factor, especially if the weather turns difficult. I think it’s important for our drivers to maintain that patience in challenging conditions. I believe that this is the key element for success,” Latvala continued.
Toyota’s GR Yaris Rally1 cars have been slightly updated for the Safari Rally, including a new suspension.
“I think it’s mainly about improving reliability, but it can also add a bit to performance,” Latvala said.
Latvala himself enjoyed a ride during the Safari’s shakedown with Evans, an experience that gave the team principal more confidence.
“Being in the car during the shakedown, in my opinion, the car is working awesomely. It’s amazing how well it handled the bumps and jumps,” Latvala said.
The Kenyan Safari adventure starts on Thursday with a spectator stage in Nairobi. Toyota’s goal is crystal clear.
“First priority is victory,” Latvala outlined.
“Yes, we have achieved here 1-2-3-4. We can’t achieve it this year because we have only three cars. If we can have two cars in top three, that would be then perfect result,” Latvala emphasized.
“From the beginning, you don’t need to push to the maximum because I’m quite sure the weather will present some difficulties. You just have to try to stay close to the lead patiently when difficulties come. I believe that this rally can be won with patient driving. You don’t need to go all out all the time.”
