The current leader of the drivers’ championship was unable to keep up with teammate Sebastien Ogier — let alone Kalle Rovanperä, who was in a class of his own throughout the day.

At the end of Friday’s running, Evans sits third overall, having lost over half a minute to Rovanperä.

However, Toyota holds the top five positions in the rally at this point, which did bring a smile to Evans’ face.

“It’s definitely been a great day for the team. On a personal note, maybe not quite so thrilled with the day,” Evans said.

“I mean, it’s been fine, don’t get me wrong, I could probably do with finding a few seconds to fight with the two guys in front. The two of them really want to be right at the front,” he added.

Evans was already unhappy after the first stage of the afternoon loop. His situation didn’t improve during the final two stages of the day either.

“The situation didn’t improve, unfortunately. I’m still fighting a little bit with the same trends that I’ve faced in quite a few tarmac rallies with the car. It’s normal, I guess, with these wide roads,” Evans reflected.

“We’re working on it to see if there’s anything else we can do. I guess there’s not too much to do, and we just have to adapt the best we can,” he continued.

Saturday presents a long day at the Rally Islas Canarias, with seven special stages on the schedule. Evans isn’t expecting major changes, although weather might play some role.

“A bit higher grip generally – I think the tarmac is a bit more abrasive – so it could be a bit more difficult for the tyres. We also have to see what the weather is doing in the morning.”
