The legendary Safari Rally is known for being an event where the fastest driver doesn’t always win. The key to success lies in managing risks and knowing when to push during the special stages. Evans leads the rally after Friday with a 7.7-second advantage over teammate Kalle Rovanperä.
“It’s been a decent day out there with no trouble for us. It’s been a very tough day, and we’ve definitely erred on the side of caution. Obviously, some guys have had trouble, which is unfortunate, but it’s part of Safari as well,” Evans summarised.
“It’s a bit frustrating sometimes because you feel like you can take a bit more risk and go a bit faster, but still, you need to keep reminding yourself where we are.”
Evans moved into the lead when Hyundai’s Ott Tänak suffered a drivetrain failure on the penultimate stage of the day. So far, Evans has managed the risks exceptionally well.
“Sometimes the feeling is 100%. But obviously, at times, when you feel there’s a risk of damaging the car, then I tend to back off a bit. It can get frustrating sometimes when you see the times of the other guys.”
On Saturday, the Safari Rally continues with six special stages. The rally concludes on Sunday.
