After a long career in the WRC, Neuville at last claimed the World Rally Championship title, putting to rest his reputation as the “eternal runner-up.”

Neuville’s trophy cabinet has finally been adorned with the award the Belgian had been chasing for years. Later, it gained another significant addition as he was named Driver of the Year in his home country, Belgium.

This was the seventh time in his career that Neuville received the title. The first time he was honoured was back in 2011 when he competed in the IRC series, claiming victories in the Corsica and Sanremo rallies.

This time, Neuville collected the award as the first-ever Belgian WRC world champion, beating out fellow nominees Laurens and Dries Vanthoor.

“This award holds special meaning. It will have a cherished place in my heart,” Neuville said in his acceptance speech, according to RTBF.

“At last, we achieved the championship we had been waiting for so long. To be chosen seven times is extraordinary,” Neuville added.

Neuville approached the accolade with great humility and wanted to share the recognition with his compatriots.

“Belgium has many talented drivers. Laurens also had an amazing season. We both deserved this title. But it’s true that after all these sacrifices, I am very pleased to receive this honour. Belgium has waited a long time for a WRC world champion. Many other top drivers, like François Duval, Freddy Loix, Bruno Thiry, and Patrick Snijers, tried before us. They all had incredible careers,” Neuville expressed his gratitude.

Neuville won’t have much time to celebrate his success. The new WRC season begins in January at Monte Carlo.

“We’ve enjoyed our world championship victory, but in a few weeks, we’ll have to start all over again. I hope I can fully enjoy the upcoming season and end it once again on the top step of the podium,” Neuville said optimistically.
