Before the season-ending Rally Saudi Arabia, Evans held a three-point lead in the championship over his team-mate Sébastien Ogier. The Welshman is chasing the first title of his career. The premise is in many ways straightforward, as Evans simply has to beat Ogier in the final rally of the season.
On the other hand, the unpredictable conditions in Saudi Arabia add their own flavour to the situation. Neither of the leading drivers would want the world championship to be decided on Saudi Arabia’s gravel.
“Everything is fine in itself, but you’ve probably heard that a rather challenging rally awaits. There will be rocky sections, soft sand and very unpredictable roads. It’s all quite a lottery overall,” Evans laments.
“Of course, there will be other factors as well, but there’s a big chance that everything could be decided by who encounters the most problems. We’ll see how things progress.”
For Evans, the situation is further complicated by his role as championship leader. The Welshman will have to open the road on gravel on Thursday.
“It will certainly be tough. The opening day seems to be the most difficult in that respect. Rocks will appear on the road anyway, whether you are the first or the fourth car on the road.”
