Sordo, who has enjoyed a long career in the World Rally Championship, competed this year in Portugal’s national series with Hyundai’s Rally2 car. Sordo fought a fierce battle against another former WRC star, Kris Meeke, and ultimately secured the title in the final round.

Sordo confirmed on Wednesday evening that his stint in the Portuguese series lasted only one season.

“Thank you Team Hyundai Portugal and Sports & You for this beautiful year in Portugal. A tough year, a difficult year in many ways, but in the end, through consistency and hard work, we achieved our goal and finished as champions,” Sordo wrote in his post.

“Thank you to all the mechanics and team members for always giving 100 %. I noticed an incredible progression in professionalism and effort throughout the season. I hope our paths cross again,” he continued.

Sordo’s announcement further fuelled rumours that he may be returning as a Hyundai WRC driver. Hyundai is expected to reveal soon who will replace Ott Tänak, who left the World Rally Championship at the end of the 2025 season.

Strong rumours suggest that Sordo and Esapekka Lappi are set to share driving duties in Hyundai’s third car. Both held the same role at Hyundai in 2024, although that season the team rotated as many as three drivers in the third entry: Sordo, Lappi and Norwegian driver Andreas Mikkelsen.

Before this year Sordo spent several seasons with Hyundai as a part-time driver. The Spanish star proved his value again last year by taking two podiums from the three WRC rallies he contested.

Sordo has driven 193 World Rally Championship events in his career. He has celebrated three victories and finished on the podium 58 times.

Hyundai has stated it is seeking a driver for its third car who can fight for podiums. Both Sordo and Lappi would fit that role.
