The series offers a behind-the-scenes look at M-Sport’s operations and has been met with an enthusiastic reception. More episodes are likely to follow. Watching the series has given team principal Richard Millener a chance to view his team from an outsider’s perspective, and he’s been pleased with what he’s seen.
“I’m quite happy with how the team works. I think there was always a risk of portraying people in a way that’s not natural to them. You’ve seen some of the characters in the team – we spend a lot of time with these people together in groups all year long, and I don’t think it’s right not to show their true personalities,” Millener said.
“I think when you have a film crew and know a story is going to be told, it automatically helps ensure you’re working to the best of your ability. You don’t want the story of a bad rally to blame one person or the fault of the team. It’s important to remember that no one person is ever solely responsible for a mistake or fault,” he added.
According to Millener, the documentary provides an honest depiction of his team’s operations.
“I think the documentary didn’t necessarily make me want to change anything about how the team works, but it did raise concerns for me initially. I wanted to make sure we didn’t tell a story that could tear the team apart, because a lot of these documentaries tend to create or focus on storylines that maybe aren’t real or lack depth, grit, and determination,” Millener explained.
“I’ve received feedback saying it would be great to see more of the gritty stuff and drama, but that doesn’t really exist within the team. The team works together well,” Millener praised.
Millener’s concern that the documentary might negatively impact team collaboration proved unfounded, and he’s keen to maintain that harmony.
“But it’s important not to upset the team spirit we have. I think this documentary highlights and reinforces that, which is important for me. While we’re all there to win, there’s a lot more to this story and the career path we’ve all chosen than just winning,” Millener concluded.
