Solberg followed the season-ending Rally Japan from the sidelines, having already completed his points-scoring events. The championship’s fate was in Sami Pajari’s hands, who needed a top-two finish in Japan to claim the title.
Pajari secured second place in the WRC2 competition in Japan, which was enough to crown him champion. He finished the season three points ahead of Solberg in the final standings.
For Solberg, the result was a bitter pill to swallow.
“This is one of those situations where you lose and obviously feel very disappointed and sad but at the same time feel extremely proud and happy. I have to say it’s been my best season so far in many ways,” Solberg wrote in his post.
“We have pushed harder than ever, we‘ve had a lot of fun with great people around. We loved every single moment of the 2024 season! Yes, we had some bad luck, but that is part of the sport we all love.”
Solberg shared heartfelt thanks to his supporters and extended his congratulations to the new champions.
“Thank you for your support, Elliott (co-driver Edmondson), team, family, fans and Skoda Motorsport for a great car. Big congratulations Sami and Enni for the title,” Solberg said.
Pajari appreciated the congratulations and returned the kind words.
“I want to congratulate you as well. Second overall in WRC2 is not bad at all. We’ve competed against each other several times, and it’s always been fun. I hope that continues in the future,” Pajari said.
Solberg has not yet revealed his plans for next season. He has previously mentioned having strong options in the WRC2 category, and rumours have linked him to top-tier WRC teams as well.
