The Esztergom-Nyerges rally met a sorrowful end on Sunday when a competing Skoda Fabia plunged into the crowd.

Authorities reported that the crash resulted in the death of four individuals, none of whom were children. Additionally, one child and one adult sustained life-threatening injuries.

A 12-year-old girl who was seriously injured died from her injuries on Tuesday, making her the fifth victim of the accident.

“We prayed for the little girl whom doctors have been fighting for days, unfortunately, without success,” wrote Olah Gyarfas, former president of the Hungarian National Motorsport Association, on Facebook.

“Our grief is immeasurable, yet as we listen to the statements, we are filled with anger, trying to find answers to the whys and hows. There are no words.”

According to Hungarian media, the girl, who had turned 12 last week, was watching the rally with her mother, who died in the accident on Sunday.

The girl’s older brother was also present at the accident site but was not injured.

Earlier, Hungarian police reported that the accident occurred in an area prohibited to spectators, which was also marked with a warning sign prohibiting entry. The police have initiated a criminal investigation into the incident.
