The route includes a few delightful surprises, sure to be warmly welcomed by both drivers and fans alike. The legendary Ouninpohja returns in a 33-kilometre incarnation, and the event will also feature a brand-new special stage, Saarikas, to the east of Äänekoski.

“The route looks very good. It includes iconic special stages as well as some new additions. New special stages are always welcome,” team boss Latvala told RallyJournal.com.

“None of the current drivers have raced Saarikas. And of course, Ouninpohja is one of the most legendary special stages, which brings back some bitter memories for me,” Latvala referred to 2017 when he had to retire from the lead after his Toyota broke down.

In last year’s Rally Finland, Latvala stepped back from his team principal duties to participate in the rally driving a Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 car. He ultimately secured a commendable fifth place.

Driving in this year’s Finnish round is enticing for Latvala.

“Rally Finland is the finest rally in the championship. It’s hard to watch from the sidelines. Of course, I understand that I now have a different role, but it wouldn’t be a bad thing if I could drive one rally a year in the championship,” Latvala hinted.

“It was again a great experience to be driving last year. The weather conditions weren’t the easiest, so if this year could offer slightly better weather, it might allow for more enjoyment.”

According to Latvala, his participation has not yet been finalised.

“I can’t promise anything at this stage, but we are at least discussing the matter within the team,” Latvala said.
