Semenuk has confirmed his participation in the Rally Latvia. The two-time American Rally Association (ARA) champion will compete in the fast gravel rally driving a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 car.

Semenuk, 33, is a major star in North America, though not primarily for his rally success. The Canadian has made a name for himself in mountain biking. His popularity is evident, with nearly 700,000 followers on Instagram – almost twice as many as two-time rally world champion Kalle Rovanperä.

Semenuk has also been actively competing in rallying. He won the ARA championship titles in 2022 and 2023, and he is on his way to a third consecutive title with Subaru.

The level of competition in the American rally series isn’t particularly high, so Semenuk faces a significant challenge ahead.

“This is something I’ve been thinking about for a while. Competing in Europe is obviously going to be different to what I’m used to. Latvia is a good event – it’s obviously new to the WRC, so it does bring a little more of a level playing field. That said, there’s so many fast drivers in that area, like even the national championships are really strong,” Semenuk told Dirtfish.

Semenuk has not set high expectations for himself. His aim is to gain experience in the world’s toughest rally series.

“Regardless of where I sit on the times – and I really don’t expect a whole lot – it would be nice to find progress throughout the event. And to leave with a bit of an understanding of where I still need to develop as a driver and find more speed.”

“I just think it’s a good tool to continue to develop my skills as a racing driver. I mean, if there’s a moment throughout the event where I have some sort competitive time or show some pace then great – but the focus here is on making me a better driver for the ARA and other Subaru Motorsports USA efforts,” Semenuk said.

The Rally Latvia will take place from 18th to 21st July.
