After his first test run, Tänak remarked that “quite interesting times at the moment” because “not sure how much we can say.” He later clarified his statement after the shakedown had finished.

“These are just a bit strange times generally in motorsport at the moment. You need to be very careful with what you say and how you express your emotions. Let’s say, they are not really allowed at the moment,” Tänak explained.

The Hyundai driver was referring to Toyota’s Sebastien Ogier, who received a suspended fine following the Acropolis Rally in Greece. Ogier had expressed his frustration with what he considered to be overly short starting intervals, a view that did not sit well with the FIA.

“In rallying, this happened with Seb, and in Formula One as well. With all these things together, I think it seems like we are really on the radar at the moment. So, let’s see where it goes from here,” Tänak commented.

“It’s difficult to say at the moment what the target is. Probably, the promoter should take the side to really explain to us what they are expecting. It’s really difficult to know at the moment how to act. Interesting times,” the Estonian added.

As for Rally Chile, Tänak is aiming for a top result. He still has a chance to fight for the WRC title against Thierry Neuville, although the Belgian holds a 34-point lead over his Hyundai teammate in the standings.

Hyundai also holds a solid lead in the manufacturers’ championship, but the team still needs points to secure the title.

“Toyota is pushing very, very hard, so it’s really not possible at the moment to give any points away. We still need to try to at least match them or try to outscore them. It’s still a long way to go and many points are on the table,” Tänak emphasised.

The third edition of Rally Chile kicks off on Friday with six special stages. Tänak has won the previous two editions of the rally – in 2019 with Toyota and last year with Ford.
