Rovanperä had a great start in the season finale of the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux series, moving from second place to the lead. The opening lap brought some drama when Sacha Norden, chasing Rovanperä in second, overshot a corner and hit the tire barrier. This damaged the right front suspension of Norden’s car, making it necessary for him to retire.
On the second lap, a safety car was deployed, bringing all the cars back together. Rovanperä had already built a one-second lead before the safety car came out. After more than ten minutes of following the safety car, the race resumed. Rovanperä maintained his lead and ultimately won by over three seconds.
Paul Meijer finished second in Sunday’s race, but the championship went to Dirk Schouten from the Netherlands, who secured the title with his third-place finish. The Porsche Cup Benelux series also saw a Finnish champion, as Jani Käkelä claimed the Pro Am class title.
In addition to this season finale, Rovanperä also won races at the Imola circuit and at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. Thus, his debut season on the racetrack brought three impressive victories. However, he missed two race weekends and four events, which ultimately affected his chances for the championship.
As this was the final event of the series, Rovanperä will now focus back on rallying for the rest of the year. He will miss next weekend’s Central European Rally but is expected to be back on the grid for the season finale in Japan in November. Additionally, he has plans to participate in the Killarney Historic Rally in Ireland and the Fiorio Cup Rally in Italy.
