The Japanese star’s father, Norihiko Katsuta, 55, is an experienced rally driver. He has competed successfully this season in the Japanese rally series, driving a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 car, a vehicle he was heavily involved in developing.
Norihiko Katsuta also competed in Rally Japan over the past two years, though previously he participated in the national event rather than the official WRC rally. This year, however, the veteran will drive in the WRC2 class in Japan, racing against the likes of Sami Pajari and other stars of the category.
Both Norihiko and Takamoto Katsuta are familiar with the conditions of the Japanese tarmac rally, as they hail from the same region. Strong performances can be expected from both in their home rally.
Naturally, greater expectations rest on the younger Katsuta in the main class, as he aims to secure valuable points for Toyota in the manufacturers’ championship battle. Takamoto Katsuta will also keep a close eye on his father’s performance over the race weekend.
“I am hoping he will do well too. He is a very experienced driver, so he doesn’t need my help,” Katsuta told the WRC website.
“Of course, I am happy to help if he wants to have advice or anything, but I still believe that he can do well himself.”
Norihiko Katsuta might benefit from the fact that his son will drive the stages before him.
“For the last two (editions) I was sharing some information with him. On one stage, some kind of drain was open, and it was quite dangerous. Straight away I sent a message to my father’s co-driver to make sure he did not hit that one.”
“Of course, he is my father and I want to support him, but he also wants me to focus on my own job,” Takamoto Katsuta says.
Rally Japan takes place next week from 21-24 November.
