The team has four full-time drivers for the upcoming season, all competing in every rally. In addition, veteran Sebastien Ogier will participate in select events throughout the year.
The biggest news for Toyota is, of course, the return of two-time world champion Kalle Rovanperä as a full-time driver. Meanwhile, Sami Pajari brings fresh blood to the team after delivering impressive performances in a Rally1 car late last season.
Toyota team principal Jari-Matti Latvala has already noted that Elfyn Evans will benefit from Rovanperä’s return, as the Welshman will no longer have to carry the burden of the championship fight alone. But how does Evans himself view the strengthened line-up and Rovanperä’s comeback?
“Well, of course, we know that the team is looking strong this year with five drivers, or four full-time drivers, plus Seb coming in for some rallies as well. So, I think we have a pretty strong line-up as a team,” Evans commented.
However, Evans’ personal goals remain unchanged: he is still chasing his first world championship title.
“But, of course, from an individual point of view, the goal is always to fight for the events and the title. So, nothing’s changed on that side,” Evans said.
At 36 years old, Evans is one of the most experienced drivers in the championship. He knows the challenges that lie ahead throughout the season, with the first one coming this weekend at Monte Carlo. Monte has always been unpredictable, with conditions ranging from wintry snow and ice to dry asphalt or rain.
“Monte, we know, is an extremely challenging rally,” Evans said.
“Adapting to the conditions is basically the key – making the right tyre calls at the right time and, of course, staying out of trouble. We know how difficult it is and how easy it is to make even a small mistake that can completely ruin your weekend. It’s easier said than done, but we still have to go there and give it our best shot,” Evans previewed the season opener, which kicks off today, Thursday.
