Tänak found true top speed only occasionally and lost the battle for fourth place to Toyota’s Kalle Rovanperä.

The Estonian ultimately finished fifth in the opening round of the WRC season, collecting a total of 11 championship points from the principality.

“It was quite an entertaining weekend but still lots of positives to take away. We got some good points and can be a bit happier with the road position going to round two,” Tänak summarised.

Tänak found his best pace on Saturday when he delivered three consecutive stage wins. It was good old Tänak, but the 2019 world champion could not consistently maintain his top form throughout the rally.

“There were some things we couldn’t get right, but obviously the base was there. We will get it sorted and working, but it takes a bit of time,” Tänak continued.

The WRC season continues next in mid-February in Sweden. It’s fair to assume that the season’s only true winter rally will suit Tänak better than the ever-unpredictable Monte-Carlo.

“I am looking forward to Sweden, and we will be able to try the upgraded car for the first time so hopefully we will see an improved performance on that side as well,” Tänak said.

Rally Sweden will take place from 13th to 16th February.
