Rytkönen achieved his first-ever victory in the World Rallycross Championship in Turkey on Sunday. This triumph was remarkable, as Rytkönen drove a Hyundai for the French PGRX team in the championship for the first time this year. On Saturday, in Istanbul, he was eliminated in the semi-finals, but he crowned the weekend with a stunning win on Sunday in extremely challenging conditions.
Rytkönen mastered the wet track conditions flawlessly and managed to keep Johan Kristoffersson, who had secured his seventh career world championship title on Saturday, behind him. Timmy Hansen finished third in Sunday’s race, ahead of his brother Kevin and Niclas Grönholm.
“I’m absolutely speechless. This is unbelievable. The weather conditions were tough, but I trusted my driving on wet-weather tyres. Huge thanks to the entire team. They’ve worked hard and believed in me all along,” said Rytkönen.
This year, Rytkönen has competed successfully in the French Rallycross Championship. The Finnish driver from a small city called Suonenjoki has previously tried his hand in the World Championship, but now he achieved true success, aided by equipment that allowed him to compete at this level.
Kevin Hansen, who finished fourth on Sunday, secured the silver in the World Championship after Kristoffersson. The Swedish one-two was confirmed when Norwegian Ole Christian Veiby’s car stalled at the start. Veiby made a valiant effort to move up the field but spun during the battle and had to settle for bronze, seven points behind. Once again, Kristoffersson was in a league of his own in the championship.
Timmy Hansen finished fourth in the final World Championship standings, ahead of Grönholm, with Klara Andersson taking sixth place in the series.
