Earlier this week, it was reported that the 63-year-old is seriously considering running for president of the FIA, motorsport’s global governing body.

The current president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, is set to complete his first term at the end of this year. So far, no official challengers have emerged, but Sainz could be a serious contender.

According to Sainz, he has received encouragement from within the motorsport community.

“There are important figures from the world of motorsport and mobility who have certainly encouraged me and continue to do so – at least to seriously consider the idea,” Sainz told Spanish outlet Marca.

The next FIA presidential election will be held this December in Uzbekistan. Sainz still has some time to decide whether he will step forward.

“There’s a point, I think in September or October, when candidacies must be submitted to stand in the election,” Sainz explained.

His decision will depend on the strength of support he can gather.

“When the time comes to decide whether to run, the right conditions need to be in place. I need to feel I have sufficient backing and guarantees that I can mount a credible campaign for the presidency,” he added.

With two World Rally Championship titles to his name and recent success in Dakar, Sainz has built a remarkable motorsport career. His most recent Dakar victory came in 2024.

However, if the Spanish legend were to become the FIA’s next president, he would have to step away from competition.

“I don’t think it would be compatible, no (to serve as president and compete at the same time). Maybe this year’s Dakar (in January 2026) could still happen, but even that could be a fitting moment and a good reason to end a long racing career,” Sainz said.
