Munster violated traffic regulations during Tuesday’s reconnaissance for the season finale. The M-Sport Ford WRC driver overtook a convoy of cars on a road marked with yellow no-overtaking lines.

The way Munster was caught makes the incident particularly embarrassing. Among the cars he overtook was an official vehicle belonging to the rally organisers, and the manoeuvre was captured on video.

Munster was summoned to a stewards’ hearing to explain the incident. He stated that his focus had slipped after completing the stage reconnaissance as he was discussing pace notes with his co-driver, Louis Louka.

Munster apologised for his actions and promised to adhere to traffic regulations for the rest of the week. Nevertheless, he was handed a fine of €1,000 for the offence.

This is Munster’s first full season competing in the WRC’s top category. He currently sits 10th in the championship standings ahead of the Japanese tarmac rally.

Rally Japan begins on Thursday with a shakedown in the morning and a short super special stage in the evening.
